VIRTUAL OUTINGS
Welcome to the Grand Canyon Historical Society Virtual Outings. This is where history meets 21st century technology as we talk about history with ZOOM casts, post links to historic videos, and lead guided virtual tours.
Do you have a historical presentation involving the Grand Canyon, the surrounding region, or an interesting event that occurred anywhere on the planet that you would like to give? (Yes, on occasion we travel virtually around the world for history!) If so, please contact outings@grandcanyonhistory.org

Virtual ZOOM Outing in December 2024
Tuesday, December 10, 2024
Mike Nelson, GCHS member and President of the Patrons of the 1956 Grand Canyon Midair Collision, presented:
We Are Going In
The Story of the 1956 Grand Canyon Midair Collision - Part 2
Part 1 covered the events of the tragedy from the start of the flights in Los Angeles leading up to the midair collision over the eastern parts (near Desert View) of the Grand Canyon. Mike Nelson presented Part 2 of his author talk which covered in exquisite details the two separate crashes of the two aircrafts into Chuar Butte and at Temple Butte in the Grand Canyon. Part 3 of the author talk (tentatively scheduled for April 8, 2025 will cover the subsequent recovery efforts, the memorials, and investigation. Mike will also speak about the "Patrons" group and its mission in Part 3.
Mike Nelson continued his presentation of what happened, based on his ten years of research and analysis, the latter being a tremendous amount of both verbal and analytical reasoning. He spent an average of about twenty hours a week working on this research and writing, over the course of a ten-year period.
Note: Mike lost his uncle Jack Groshans on the United flight in this tragic accident.
Speaker Biographical Notes
Mike Nelson became associated with GCHS in 2014, when he gave a speech at the dedication of the crash sites as a National Historic Landmark near Desert View. Mike co-founded Patrons of the 1956 Grand Canyon Midair Collision, and became the group's president. The "Patrons" is an affiliate of GCHS.
Mike and his wife Barbara, who is the secretary of the Patrons group, live in Waverly, Iowa. They publish a quarterly e-newsletter which is issued to all Patron members and others who have requested to be on the group's mailing list. The newsletter provides updates on varous projects (several in partnership with the GCHS) and is highly recommended; insights about the accident and victims based on Mike's prior research and the group's on-going research; and details about commemorative events associated with the 1956 Grand Canyon Midair Collision.
