VIRTUAL OUTINGS
Welcome to the Grand Canyon Historical Society Virtual Outings. This is where history meets 21st century technology as we talk about history with ZOOM casts, post links to historic videos, and lead guided virtual tours.
Do you have a historical presentation involving the Grand Canyon, the surrounding region, or an interesting event that occurred anywhere on the planet that you would like to give? (Yes, on occasion we travel virtually around the world for history!) If so, please contact outings@grandcanyonhistory.org

David "Davy" R. Crockett, GCHS Board Member (Elect), Author, Historian, and Ultrarunner Presented Guide Stories Contained in His New Book "Grand Canyon Rim to Rim History"
"Early Rim-to-Rim Guides"
Today, thousands make a pilgrimage each year to experience journeying across the Canyon’s great expanse, rim-to-rim. In the early years, many people who were not park employees made a difference by guiding daring groups rim to rim on the rugged inner canyon trails.
In 1913, Theodore Roosevelt and sons were guided across the canyon by leaders of the Bar Z Cattle Company to hunt mountain lions on the North Rim with legendary Jimmy Owens. Mostly in the dark, Roosevelt’s group took eight hours to ride up to the North Rim from Rust Camp (Phantom Ranch) on the primitive Old Bright Angel Trail.
From 1925 to 1929, “Prof” Thomas Cureton (1875-1957), the superintendent of schools in Williams, Arizona, guided large groups of youth from Williams on ultra-light backpacking trips across the Canyon and back. Some of the youth wrote detailed trip reports that have recently been discovered. Cureton shared his love for the inner Canyon with a generation of at least 50 young men and women. During their hikes, they played games, had water fights, told ghost stories around bonfires, and the girls sang the group to sleep.
Charlie Thorton (1912-1993) was the first to popularize the idea of hiking the Canyon rim-to-rim in a day. He worked at the Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind in Tucson, Arizona. From 1956-1960, he guided groups of blind boys from the school on an annual hike across the Canyon rim-to-rim in a day. “These blind boys saw more than half the hurrying tourists who promenade the rim patio of Bright Angel Lodge.”
