The Grand Canyon Historical Society presents the Pioneer Award to honor living individuals who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the understanding of, and knowledge about, the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. A call for nominations for the Grand Canyon Historical Society Pioneer Award is made each year in January. Nominations for the award are accepted until March 1. The individual honored will have made a significant and lasting contribution to the understanding of, and knowledge about, the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in areas of expertise such as: Grand Canyon region history, administration in the National Park, geology, archaeology, photography, writing, hiking, river running, etc., that is, any area that advances the knowledge and appreciation of the Grand Canyon region.
